 General View

Aligned with Erasmus+ and Jean Monnet objectives, the Center for Euro-Latinamerican Legal Studies on Sustainable Consumption and Green Transition promotes learning mobility, academic cooperation, research excellence, citizen inclusion, innovative ideas, and transversal skills, with a focus on sustainable consumption and the green transition.

The Jean Monnet Center of Excellence CELESTE implements various key strategies.

CELESTE actively promotes the EU model and European values in Latin America. Its focus on sustainable consumption and the green transition reinforces its commitment to fundamental rights, such as the right to health and environmental protection for future generations, along with related economic, social, and cultural rights, as well as access to justice.

CELESTE contributes to legal, political, and economic discourse, generating knowledge and ideas to support EU policy and improve EU-MERCOSUR cooperation and development policies related to sustainable consumption. The recent EU-MERCOSUR partnership offers opportunities for mutual benefit, especially in energy and natural resources critical for the ecological transition.

CELESTE facilitates dialogue between academia, civil society, and policymakers at local, national, and supranational levels. Leveraging existing and future cooperation agreements between European and Latin American universities, the CoE exchanges insights and best practices on sustainable consumption and environmental protection. This includes building relationships with professionals in sustainable sectors such as fashion, energy, and pharmaceuticals, and improving communication with non-legal experts.

bandiereCELESTE staff firmly believe that the regulatory approach is insufficient unless supported by a new, widespread green ethic in society, particularly through the green awareness of the new generations. The many activities of the CoE focus on educating informed, conscientious, and engaged citizens dedicated to the preservation of the environment and resources, and, last but not least, on promoting the development of skills that could improve career prospects and place participants in strategic areas for sustainable growth.

University E-Learning Course   Torna al Menu Principale

zooThe “Center for Euro-Latinamerican Legal Studies on Sustainable Consumption and Green Transition” engages students and early-career researchers by introducing them to EU policies on sustainable consumption, as well as international cooperation efforts related to pollution and climate change. The initiative fosters interdisciplinary collaboration and strengthens ties between the EU and Latin America by promoting the exchange of best practices in product quality, consumer protection, and environmental sustainability.

CELESTE also undertakes broad outreach activities to disseminate knowledge on EU initiatives across diverse national contexts. Through these efforts – including the development of a new e-learning course, LAB, designed for university students – the CoE enhances understanding of EU green transition policies and practices, contributing to the diffusion of the EU model and the promotion of European values throughout Latin America.

The LAB on “Sustainability and the Circular Economy: The Challenges of Consumer Law between Europe and Latin America” is open to students of various degree courses at the University of Milan and can also be followed upon request by students of Universities involved in CELESTE. It represents a first step towards the creation of a cross-border collaboration with COIL to be achieved through the network of Universities involved in the Jean Monnet Center of Excellence.

Audience for Secondary Schools   Torna al Menu Principale

audience

Within the framework of CELESTE, specific outreach activities are dedicated to secondary schools to promote early awareness of European Union values, sustainability, and the legal aspects of the green transition. These initiatives aim to extend knowledge beyond the university by introducing students to fundamental concepts of European citizenship, comparative law, sustainable consumption, and environmental responsibility in an age-appropriate and pedagogically structured way.

Activities for secondary schools include interactive seminars, guided debates, and the development of tailored educational materials delivered by CELESTE academic staff. Through direct engagement with students and teachers, these initiatives encourage critical thinking, civic engagement, and informed participation in discussions on sustainability and environmental governance. By strengthening links between secondary and higher education, CELESTE helps build long-term interest in European studies and fosters a new generation of informed and responsible citizens.

Ancillary Activities in Europe & Latin America   Torna al Menu Principale

Bioeconomy-EUFMSK-conference

CELESTE complements its core research and teaching mission by engaging in a wide range of dissemination, training, public dialogue, specialist events, educational production, and transnational networking. These activities aim to broaden and deepen knowledge of sustainability and the green transition beyond academic boundaries, stimulate informed debate at public, institutional, and societal levels, and reinforce the impact of European and comparative legal scholarship.

Within this framework, CELESTE conducts comparative legal research on sustainability and green transition practices in European and Latin American legal systems; provides legal consultancy and policy advice to public and private stakeholders; contributes to legislative reform processes and country-specific analyses; and produces scientific publications on international models of sustainable governance.

EUCELESTE actively participates in seminars, conferences, and workshops organized by other universities and Jean Monnet Centers, Chairs, and Modules, while also engaging in third-mission and capacity-building activities involving associations, NGOs, schools, and citizens.

Ancillary activities are supported by strong international cooperation among CELESTE members and by networking initiatives aimed at developing and strengthening scientific agreements between European and Latin American universities.
